Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
